Winnipeg singer-songwriter Raine Hamilton believes that music is for everyone who wants it and she is working to make concerts more inclusive. In 2017, she began offering concerts with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, to help make live music and the community that comes with it, more accessible to the Deaf community.
This October, The Raine Hamilton String Trio will be doing a full tour across Saskatchewan with ASL interpretation. Starting on October 1st in Indian Head, the trio will perform songs from Raine's latest album Night Sky, interpreted into ASL by two ASL/English interpreters. See below for the complete tour schedule.
The Raine Hamilton String Trio combines the style of the singer-songwriter tradition, with the expressive sounds of a string quartet. With Raine on vocals, violin, and guitar, alongside a bassist and cellist, these songs ring out, way out, into the beyond. The addition of ASL interpretation on this tour is an important step in making music and live shows more accessible.
"We planned our first show with American Sign Language interpretation, in consultation with the Deaf community, in 2017," says Raine. "Since then we've been building and planning more shows, working with interpreters, as well as with Deaf artists and consultants. This our first tour with ASL interpretation and we'll be sharing songs from my new album Night Sky. This album paints a picture, like a story out in the stars. And to me, these songs are about reaching and growing and being, and it feels amazing to share these songs that are so dear to me - it's like the sharing of my heart."
Since the release of her sophomore album Night Sky earlier this year, Raine Hamilton has been touring extensively across Canada and working towards her next album which is set for release in 2020. Raine will be working on her new album at a self-directed residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in January 2019 where she plans to "write songs, sit in the stillness, and practice scales like there's no tomorrow, near a mountain."
